Workspaces & your files

Understand where your notes live, how folders work, and how to keep a copy of your work.

A workspace is a folder

On desktop, a workspace is the folder you open in OrbitalNote. Its Org files and subfolders appear in the file tree. There is no import into a proprietary note database.

Use Open folder… to switch workspaces. If you already use Org with another editor, open the same folder. OrbitalNote preserves untouched source, including syntax it does not render.

Create, rename, and move

New note asks for a name and folder. Leave off .org if you like; it is added automatically. The folder menu offers new notes and subfolders.

Use a file’s menu to rename, move, copy, or delete it. You can also drag a file into a folder in the tree. Read the destination preview before confirming a move.

Start small: Inbox.org for capture, Projects.org for work in progress, and Life.org for everything else. The app doesn’t require a particular structure.

Android storage choices

The private notebook is stored inside OrbitalNote’s app storage. Updating the APK preserves it; uninstalling removes it.

Recent previews also support linking a folder with Android’s system folder picker. Access depends on the selected provider and permissions; third-party cloud providers may behave differently from on-device folders. If access is revoked, reconnect the folder rather than assuming it was deleted.

Keep a backup

On desktop, back up the workspace folder with your usual backup tool. Include local images and attachments as well as Org files. You can inspect or edit your notes in any plain-text editor.

Sync carries changes between devices, including edits and deletions; keep an independent backup for recovery from mistakes. The Sync preview does not transfer attachments.

Working in another editor

OrbitalNote watches for file changes. If a file changes while you have unsaved edits, resolve the conflict rather than blindly reloading. Save a separate copy of the version you want to preserve before choosing which content to keep.

Links between notes are ordinary relative Org file links. See linking notes.
